Explain how flooding can be caused by physical factors. (4)

  1. An example of a physical cause of flooding is people chopping down trees flooding can happen. By people cutting down trees for timber paper etc there are less trees (and even if they are replanted they will take some time to grow). By chopping down these trees near a river they will not adsorb waters from floods and the river will therefore overflow. This is why deforestation can be a problem and near rivers afforestation is preferred so floods can be stopped naturally cheaply and simply.

  2. Physical factors of a flood include monsoons, low lying land and snow melting. Monsoons can cause a river to overflow or even cause a dam to break and will cause flooding. Low lying land means that the lands is low compared to the level of the water, this is why flooding is such a big problem in places such as Bangladesh because with low lying land it is easier for the river to overflow than land which is fairly high above the water. Lastly by large amount of snow melting it can add to the volume of the water in a river and will make it flood easier. These are the 3 main physical factors for why floods occur. (sorry I thought my last answer was wrong).

    1. Your last answer was wrong. Thanks for redoing it. Good answer. You outline two great points (snowmelt and heavy rain) and explain clearly. Talk about ground saturation if you mention rain/snow.

  3. Flooding can be caused by excessive rainfall. This flows directly into the river and the water level rises and can flood. Snow melt can cause flooding. Snow on the land melts as the temperature rises, and the water produced flows into the river, rising the water level. Low, flat land and absence of natural interception of rain by trees contributes to the amount of water flowing into the river and therefore flooding.

  4. Flooding can be caused by an excess of water, which can be produced either by snow melting or just an increase in rainfall. The water produced by this two factors flows into the river, making the water level rise which can lead to the river overflowing, which is flooding. Flat land can contribute to the amount of water flowing into a river as it isn't blocking the water's path, it's leading directly to the river.

    1. 3/4 Your explainations blend into each other. It is not completely clear what you mean. Flat land does not strictly contribute. You would be better off talking about steep slopes.

  5. Physical factors like heavy rainfall can cause flooding. The rainfall flows into the river therefore raising the level of the water. Rises in a river can cause it to overflow its banks causing a flood. In a similar way snow melt can also cause flooding. When a large amount of snow melts at once there is a large surge in water flowing into the river. This rapidly increases the river level. Another physical factor is low lying flat land. Water can flow quickly over this because there is nothing in its way and there is nothing preventing the water from flooding somewhere if this flat land is next to a town or village.

    1. Good structure. You clearly state a point, then explain. Rain, good. Snowmelt, good. Again, flat land does not strictly contribute. You would be better off talking about steep slopes.

  6. Flooding can be caused by an increase in rainfall or snow melting. When there is a large amount of snow melting the water will flow into the river causing the water levels to rise. An increase in rainfall increases the water levels which can cause flooding. Low lying flat land is an easy route for water to flow into the river.

  7. One way that flooding can be caused is in the increase of rainfall meaning the river has to much water and overflows. Another way is snow melting, this causes a sudden increase in water levels causing floods. Lack of vegetation can contribute towards flooding as there is not enough roots to absorb all the water. Low flat land means water is more likely to flow into it and is therefore more likely to be flooded.

    1. *too much water.

You need to explain your first point in a little more detail. Eg ground reaches saturation.

Great point about vegetation. use key terms. interception.

Flat land does not strictly contribute. You would be better off talking about steep slopes.

  8. A physical cause of flooding could be heavy rainfall or snow melting. The heavy rainfall could overflow the rivers and cause the river to break its banks. When the snow melts it causes large amounts water to be added to rivers or overflow fields. In addition, if there is flat lands the water would build up and cause more flooding.

Your explanation for both your points could be clearer.

  9. A physical cause of flooding is heavy rainfall. Heavy ainfall is the main cause because the rain overflows the river. The effect of excessive rainfall can be worsened when coupled with a narrow flood plain because the water does not have enough space to move on to safely. Heavy snow fall can also be a cause of river flooding. When there is a large build-up of snow, as it begins to melt it takes the same effect as rainfall where it overflws the river and causes it to flood. De-forestation can also worsen the effects of flooding because less water is absorbed in the occurence of a flood.

    1. Good attempt at bringing in an original idea. Lots of blind copying of ideas on this thread. A narrow floodplain would make the flooding worse, but it does not lead to flooding so it is not on the mark scheme.

Rainfall/snowmelt/deforestation. Good points, could be explained with more clarity.

  10. one way that flooding can be caused is through deforestation, this is because there will be no trees to soak up or block the flood waters. another way is when it snows, the snow will melt all at once and all go into the same river causing it to overflow and flood. A physical cause of flooding is also heavy rainfall, this is because all of this rain will go into a river and the banks will spill. a final way that flooding occurs is due to flat land, this is because the river has nowhere to go down and will just sit there and run off.

    1. Deforestation, good. Snowmelt, good. Try and use more key terms. saturation, interception etc.

Flat land does not strictly contribute. You would be better off talking about steep slopes.

      4/4 remove last sentence.

  11. heavy rainfall and snow melt are the main contributing factors when it comes to river flooding. when there is increased rainfall, the problem can worsen when the flood plains are narrow and small. this forces the water into the towns and cities. snow melt works in almost exactly the same way, when there is increased snow melt in the mountains, it runs into the river causing a massive increase in the water level; this results in flooding further down the river.

    1. two good points but essentially the same explanation for snow and rain.

Flood plains do not cause flooding, they make the effects worse. Difference.

  12. river flooding can be caused by snow melt, this is where snow melts causing a large surge of water which can flood the river. also heavy rainfall can also cause rivers to flood this rainfall can be worsened by several key factors of the river for instance, narrow flood plain and low lying land.

  13. Physical factors effecting river flooding are heavy rainfall or melting snow. As large amounts of snow melts, excess water flows into the rivers therefore raising the water levels and causing it to flood. When there is heavy rainfall the rivers begin to overflow. If the river sits in low lying land the effects of heavy rainfall can be much worse. Deforestation can also affect river flooding because if there are less trees, less water is being taking in, resulting in more floodwater

    1. 4/4. Although you could get rid of some of this. deforestation, good. snowmelt and rain, good.

      USE KEY TERMS!!!!

  14. Rainfall or snow melting are two physical factors of flooding. When there is heavy rainfall and goes into the river it can fill up and eventually overflow causing flooding. When snow melts, normally at the top of mountains, the water can then go into the river causing it to overflow and flood

  15. A physical factor that can cause flooding is excessive rainfall along the drainage basin of the river. Rain falls and drains out into the river. If a large amount of water flows into the river, it will burst it's banks flooding the surrounding area. Another physical factor is the height of the land around the river. Flat low land is more likely to flood than hilly land, this means that the upper course(hilly/mountainous) is less likely to flood than the lower course(Flat).

    1. Rain, yes. flat land, no. The rain has a chance to infiltrate into the ground on flat land. on steep slopes, all of the water flows quickly to the river, which can burst its banks.

  16. Flooding can be caused by physical factors. One of the factors is intense rain fall in areas such as the Amazon rain forest where the monsoon season is very common which can cause the river to flood its banks. Also, low lying land would not stop or prevent a river from flooding.

    1. No need for examples. 4 marks, hasnt asked for examples. You mention rain. Low lying land plays little part in river flooding. Your explanation of rainfall leading to flooding is a little basic. Read a 4 mark answer and redo please.

  17. Flooding is mainly caused by physical factors, a factor that is very common in colder countries can be snow melt. The melted snow will run into the river, raise the height of the river and then cause a flood. Another main factor of river flooding is rainfall. Rainfall will raise the height of the water (just like melted snow) and will cause the river to overflow.

  19. Explain how flooding can be caused by physical factors. (4) 2:2

    flooding can be caused by several physical factors such as;
heavy rainfall for prolonged periods of time, causing the volume of water pasing through daringe baisens to increase
in effect the river will over flow and burst its banks.
another physical factor is snow melt, snow builds up on land as it melts it will pass through the dranige baisens adding to the volume of water in the river, causing flooding.

A good answer. I would have tried to get in deforestation, steep slopes or antecedent conditions. Your explanations of snow/rain are very similar. 3/4
